Onli returns for the 83rd Biennial

The Whitney Museum of American Art has appointed Meg Onli and Zack Winokur to organize its Biennial opening in March 2028. The exhibition will be the 83rd in the series. Onli previously co-curated the 2024 edition, Even Better Than the Real Thing, with Chrissie Iles. Whitney director Scott Rothkopf highlighted her approach to American art history and Winokur’s experience across opera, theatre, dance and visual art when describing the partnership.[1], [2]

A curator with an existing Whitney programme

Onli joined the museum as curator-at-large in 2023 and became Nancy and Fred Poses Curator in 2024. Before moving to the Whitney, she worked at the Underground Museum in Los Angeles and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. She also organized the museum’s Roy Lichtenstein retrospective with artist Alex Da Corte. That exhibition opened last month. Onli has described the Biennial’s history of reinvention as a starting point for conversations with artists about the forthcoming edition.[1]

Winokur brings a performance background

Winokur co-founded the American Modern Opera Company, whose five-week Lincoln Center festival in 2025 presented 12 new productions. His projects include work at Opera Philadelphia and an installation with Hugh Hayden and Davóne Tines for the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Triennial. He previously led Little Island, an off-site venue for the 2026 Whitney Biennial. That edition, curated by Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer, closed less than a month ago after welcoming more than 550,000 visitors.[1]
