Starbucks will close about 250 North American cafes

Starbucks will close about 250 underperforming cafes in North America, roughly 1 percent of more than 18,000 locations, with about 300 million dollars in restructuring charges. Global News reported the same 250 stores and Brian Niccol's 2024 start.

250 cafes, and a 300 million dollar charge

The closures are about 1 per cent of more than 18,000 North American cafes. The company put restructuring charges at about 300 million dollars. Starbucks said on Thursday it will close about 250 cafes in North America. That is about 1 per cent of more than 18,000 locations. Chief operating officer Mike Grams wrote that the company selected sites where it does not see a consistent customer experience or a path to acceptable financial performance. The fiscal 2026 net-new-opening outlook is 440 cafes, down from a prior range of 600 to 650. The new cafes come from international markets. Most closures fall before the fiscal year ends. Restructuring charges are about 300 million dollars: about 200 million dollars for early lease exits and separation benefits, and 100 million dollars of non-cash impairment. Global News reported that Starbucks will close 250 more stores in Canada and the United States. Brian Niccol joined in 2024. Last September the company closed 627 stores and laid off 900 non-retail employees. The page is dated 24 September.[1], [2]

The list of cafes is absent

Both pages put the fresh round at 250 North American cafes and both date it to 24 September. CNBC adds about 300 million dollars in restructuring charges and a cut in the opening outlook to 440. Global News adds the earlier round: 627 stores and 900 non-retail layoffs, and Niccol's arrival in 2024. Mike Grams, on the Global News page, said the targeted cafes miss the financial result or the experience the company wants. The page does not list the sites. CNBC likewise withholds the street addresses. The count is 250. The map is not published.[1], [2]

A second round, not a new chain

Global News keeps last September in view: 627 stores closed and 900 non-retail employees laid off, after Niccol joined in 2024. That is the prior round. The new round is the 250. The two integers are not the same action. CNBC's 300 million dollars and the 440 opening outlook belong to this filing, not to last year's round. A reader adding 250 to 627 is mixing two Septembers. The page that states 250 as this week's plan is the one to use for the fresh count.[2], [1]
