Two dates, one day apart
In its 24 September release the European Central Bank said Schnabel informed President Christine Lagarde that she will step down on 3 January 2027. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced her intention to appoint Schnabel Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, effective 4 January 2027. ZAWYA's page headline states the same arrival: Schnabel takes the IMF financial counsellor post from 4 January 2027. The European Central Bank (ECB) release is the source for the 3 January departure. The headline is the second account of the 4 January start. Only the headline's 4 January 2027 start is taken from that page.[1], [2]
No cooling-off period, and a wall around IMF files
Schnabel will remain in her current post until 3 January. Following an opinion from the Ethics Committee, the Governing Council decided that no cooling-off period is required. A cooling-off period is a mandatory wait between leaving one institution and starting another. The council said none is required here. Schnabel will not be involved in IMF-related matters for the rest of her ECB term. That restriction is the council's, written in the 24 September release.[1]
Who names the next board member
A successor will be appointed by the European Council, the meeting of EU national leaders that fills this seat. Her board duties will be reassigned temporarily among the remaining members if necessary. Lagarde thanked her for seven years of work. The release does not name a successor. ZAWYA's headline does not name one either. The open seat is the part of the story both accounts leave unfinished. Isabel Schnabel leaves the Executive Board on 3 January 2027. The next day, 4 January 2027, she is due to start as IMF financial counsellor and as director of the Monetary and Capital Markets department. Kristalina Georgieva intends that appointment. The council said no cooling-off period is required, and Schnabel will not handle IMF-related matters during the rest of the ECB term. The magnitude is one board departure and one named IMF job, dated a day apart.[1]
