India’s September retail inflation rises to 5.54%

India’s annual retail inflation climbed to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August. Food inflation rose to 7.74%, helping lift the headline rate. The reading remains below the central bank’s 6% upper tolerance limit, but is the highest headline figure since the new consumer-price series began in January.

Annual consumer inflation reaches 5.54%

India’s National Statistics Office released September consumer prices on October 12. Annual inflation reached 5.54%, up from 4.83% in August. The September rate was also reported in rounded form as 5.5%. The new consumer-price series, based on 2024, began in January; September’s headline rate was its highest reading so far.[1], [2]

Rural consumer inflation was 6.08%, compared with 4.88% in urban areas. The national figure therefore combines readings that differ between the two settings. The statistics office said it gathered prices from 1,407 urban markets and 1,465 villages. Its headline rate measures annual changes across the consumer basket, rather than the price of a single product.[1]

Food prices accelerate faster

Food inflation rose to 7.74% from 5.97% in August. Onion prices rose 108.09% from a year earlier, while ginger, garlic and lemons also registered steep increases. Potatoes and tomatoes, by contrast, had negative annual price changes. The food basket thus contained large differences between individual products, even as its overall inflation rate increased alongside the headline rise.[1]

The food-and-beverages category rose 7.4%; that category should not be treated as identical to the food measure used by the other report. Transport prices increased 5% annually, while restaurant and accommodation services rose 9.4%. Those components add context to the broader consumer-price reading without equating different index categories or individual product prices.[2]

The rate remains below the central bank’s ceiling

The Reserve Bank of India targets 4% inflation within a band extending two percentage points either side, making 6% its upper tolerance limit. September’s 5.54% rate remained below that ceiling. The bank had raised its policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 5.50% the previous week, its first increase in nearly four years. It also lifted its inflation forecast for the current fiscal year from 5% to 5.2%.[1]

Economists cited in the coverage offered forecasts for later months, separate from the completed September figures. The released data establish faster food inflation and a headline rate still inside, but nearer to the top of, the central bank’s tolerance band. The new index series offers no comparable category detail for earlier years. Its food reading should be interpreted within the available series.[2]
