The International Criminal Court under pressure from two directions

On the same day the International Criminal Court was shaken by an internal removal of a prosecutor and by Venezuela's withdrawal; the two developments tested the court's authority from separate directions.

What changed

The Assembly of States Parties voted to remove prosecutor Karim Khan after an inquiry into sexual-misconduct allegations; through his lawyer, Khan denied the allegations and called the decision 'political.' On the same day Venezuela announced an 'irrevocable' withdrawal from the International Criminal Court, accusing it of 'geographical bias'; the process had begun with the National Assembly's December vote.[1], [2]

The common constraint on authority

The two events touch the same constraint through different doors: the court's authority and independence. One runs through the institution's internal governance and the other through a state's exit, joining the Khan and Venezuela files on the legitimacy ground of the International Criminal Court. The common mechanism is that an international institution is being tested from inside and outside at once, in a political-pressure environment sharpened by US Secretary Rubio's declaration that he would 'disable' the court.[1], [2]

Limits and the signal to watch

Neither claim is independently established: the allegations against Khan and Venezuela's 'bias' frame belong to the parties and should be read with care. Khan stressed that he was removed while under sanctions and while the court was under intense political pressure. The observable signal to watch is whether the decision stays isolated; if other Latin American or African states follow a similar withdrawal, or the transition to the deputy prosecutors is shaken by a further break, it may confirm that the court's authority is eroding.[1], [2]
