Algeria severs diplomatic relations with the UAE

Algeria severed diplomatic relations with the UAE, accusing it without specifics of provocative and hostile actions, and gave the Emirati ambassador 48 hours to leave. The UAE Foreign Ministry said it hoped the decision would prove temporary, while presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said relations should rest on clear interests and communication.

The decision was announced through state media

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed. France 24 and AP report that the decision was carried through state media. The statement said every avenue for preserving the bilateral relationship had been exhausted and accused the other side of provocative, hostile and unjustified conduct. It did not identify a particular incident behind those allegations. The ambassador was given 48 hours to leave the country. The decision took effect immediately.[1], [2]

The UAE hopes the rupture is temporary

The UAE Foreign Ministry said it hoped Algeria's decision would be temporary and that the countries' fraternal ties would ultimately be preserved, according to AP. France 24 reported that Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, also avoided a direct counter-accusation. Gargash said relations between states should rest on rationality, communication and clearly stated interests rather than riddles that require decoding. Abu Dhabi's first response therefore acknowledged the rupture while using language that did not entirely close the door.[2], [1]

The tension had surfaced before

France 24 notes that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously accused the UAE of seeking to destabilise Libya, Mali and Sudan. Algeria also began the process of cancelling a 2013 air-services agreement with the Emirates in February. The ministry's latest statement does not say which new action prompted the diplomatic break. The verifiable developments on Thursday are the formal severing of relations, the ambassador's 48-hour deadline and the UAE's explicit hope that the decision will be temporary. Earlier disputes appear in the report as background.[1], [2]
