Bessent will raise Iran finance ties with He Lifeng

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the House Financial Services Committee he would meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng this weekend, before Xi Jinping's Washington visit, to discuss China's financial ties with Iran. The Financial Times headline places that meeting in New York ahead of a Trump-Xi summit.

The weekend meeting is on the House record

Bessent told the House Financial Services Committee he had had some very good private discussions with China and looked forward to those continuing this weekend when he met his Chinese counterpart. He did not give a date or venue. The South China Morning Post reported that Xi is due in Washington for a bilateral summit with President Donald Trump; Beijing has not confirmed the visit date. The National said Washington last month broadened secondary sanctions aimed at businesses and countries that still transact with Iran. Bessent said the effort to isolate Iran's economy would continue into the state visit.[1]

The FT headline puts He Lifeng in New York

The Financial Times on 15 September 2026 reported that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet China's He Lifeng in New York ahead of a Trump-Xi summit. Beyond that headline it does not add a date, a venue detail or Iran-finance specifics; New York and the pre-summit timing are the FT's own line.[2]

He Lifeng is the counterpart both names

Both texts say Bessent will sit with He Lifeng before a Trump-Xi meeting. The National carries the Iran finance ties and the House testimony; the FT adds New York. The weekend timing is the National's account of the testimony; the exact day is still blank.[1], [2]
