Italy will not wait for Aspides to escort ships at Bab el-Mandeb
Crosetto said Italy is standing up its navy so Italian merchant ships keep moving at Bab el-Mandeb. He said Italy will not wait for Aspides. ANSA's 17 September headline names the same refusal to wait for the EU. Al Jazeera recorded Bergamini in Djibouti and no fewer than ten Italian merchant ships seeking protection. The government and parliament have not set the mandate.

Not waiting for Aspides
Al Jazeera reported that Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Italy is mobilising its navy to keep Italian merchant ships moving through Bab el-Mandeb. At the Risorsa Mare forum in La Spezia on 17 September he said that together with the chief of staff he had decided not to wait for Aspides to determine whether ships may pass. ANSA’s 17 September English headline names Crosetto, the EU and Bab el-Mandeb and says Italy will not wait. Al Jazeera supplies the La Spezia forum setting and the Aspides operation name.[1], [2]
Bergamini in Djibouti
Al Jazeera recorded La Sicilia reporting that the frigate Bergamini is in Djibouti and that no fewer than ten Italian-flagged or Italian-owned merchant ships are waiting for protection through the strait. Crosetto said he was not deciding at that moment how many Italian naval vessels would be sent. The Bergamini-in-Djibouti and at-least-ten-merchant-ships detail is Al Jazeera recording another Italian outlet. ANSA’s retained card does not add a ship count of its own.[1]
A mandate still open
Any mandate still has to be set with the government and parliament, Al Jazeera reported. The national escort is a mobilisation decision, not a finished parliamentary authorisation. Parliament and government still have to write the mandate, in Al Jazeera’s account. ANSA’s headline is the refusal to wait, not the later legal instrument.[1], [2]
