UAE confirms Netanyahu met its president in Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi on 27 September. The previously unannounced visit was reported before the Emirati confirmation on 28 September. The official account described a discussion of bilateral relations but announced no agreement. A CNN source described Iran as a leading topic; that account of the agenda has not been confirmed by the Emirati statement.

A 27 September meeting confirmed the next day

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi on 27 September. CNN reported the previously unannounced visit on the account of an Israeli source familiar with the trip; Al Jazeera separately reported the UAE’s official confirmation on 28 September. The two reporting routes support the occurrence, participants, place and date of the meeting. The confirmation came on 28 September, so the date of the diplomatic encounter is 27 September, not the date on which it became official news.[1], [2]

The official account names bilateral relations

According to the UAE account reported by Al Jazeera, the leaders discussed relations between their two countries and ways to strengthen them. The statement did not announce a signed agreement, a new defence decision or a joint declaration. The UAE and Israel formalised relations after the Abraham Accords in 2020, and this meeting shows that the leaders maintained direct contact. The official description does not provide a detailed agenda or establish any concrete change in policy. It is therefore a confirmed meeting with a broadly stated subject, rather than an announced diplomatic deal.[1]

One account of the agenda is unconfirmed

CNN’s Israeli source said Iran dominated the discussion, but CNN’s report did not obtain confirmation of that agenda from Netanyahu’s office. The later Emirati statement discussed bilateral relations without confirming the source’s description of Iran as the main topic. That leaves the detailed agenda uncertain even though the meeting itself is established. Neither account reports a concrete agreement arising from the visit. An unannounced meeting and a source’s description of its subject do not establish that the leaders adopted a joint policy.[2], [1]
