Police open investigation after weekend discovery

Ugandan police are investigating the killing of Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan soldier and critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Residents found the 50-year-old dead outside Uganda’s capital Kampala over the weekend. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke addressed the case on Monday. Responsibility for the killing and a motive have not been established.[1], [2]

Widow voices fear for the family

Kabera’s widow, Jeanne d’Arc Rwigema Uwizeye, told BBC Great Lakes in a written message that she feared for her own safety and that of their children. His family said he had left to inspect a construction site about 45 kilometres outside Kampala. Kabera had sought asylum in Uganda, saying he faced political persecution. He left Rwanda after a sexual-assault accusation, which he denied.[1]

Exiled opposition demands a thorough inquiry

A former army sergeant major, Kabera was also known as a singer and YouTuber. His channel had more than 144,000 subscribers and over 800 videos, many criticising Kagame and his administration. The Rwanda National Congress, an exiled opposition group, called for a thorough investigation and for those responsible to face justice. The group also raised concerns about the safety of Rwandans living abroad. The police investigation follows the discovery of Kabera’s body; no perpetrator has been publicly identified.[1]
