Lavrov takes regional diplomacy to Tehran
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov travelled to Tehran on Monday for discussions on the war and regional security. The visit followed his talks with Gulf ministers in Manama, Bahrain’s capital. The Tehran visit brings the diplomatic itinerary to Iran, after Gulf governments asked Moscow to use its influence to support de-escalation.[1], [2]
Iranian president and foreign minister on planned agenda
Russian state news agency TASS said meetings were planned with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian. It described an agenda covering steps to lower Gulf tensions and strengthen the comprehensive partnership between Russia and Iran. No ceasefire or new agreement was announced with Lavrov’s arrival. In the preceding Manama talks, he had presented an updated Russian collective-security proposal envisaging direct dialogue among coastal states and neighbours including Iraq and Jordan.[1]
Washington and Tehran exchange threats before the visit
Before the visit, US President Donald Trump warned that Washington could act again unless Iran rapidly changed its behaviour. Araghchi replied that Iran had emerged stronger from the earlier confrontation. Their remarks remained the parties’ threats and assessments. Gulf governments had meanwhile called for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to return to its prewar position, citing threats to energy, food and supply routes. Those demands formed the regional backdrop to Lavrov’s subsequent contacts in Tehran.[1]
