Iran designates Britain’s navy and air force as terrorist organisations

Iran’s foreign ministry designated Britain’s Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organisations under Iranian law, while classifying MI6 as a hostile group. Tehran described the measures as reciprocal, citing British action against the Revolutionary Guards and alleging British involvement in attacks against Iran. Those conflict-related accusations remain attributed to the ministry.

Iran announces classifications for British forces

Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday that it had designated Britain’s Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organisations under Iranian legislation. It also classified MI6, Britain’s foreign-intelligence agency, as a hostile group. The measures give the military services and the intelligence agency different categories within Iran’s legal system.[1], [2]

Different Iranian laws underpin the decisions

The ministry linked the naval and air-force designations to Iranian countermeasures legislation adopted after the United States designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s military and security organisation, as a terrorist organisation. For MI6, it cited an espionage law concerning cooperation with hostile states. These are Iranian domestic classifications; no corresponding international designation was announced.[1]

Tehran cites Britain’s July action

Tehran described its action as reciprocal and cited Britain’s July classification of the Revolutionary Guards as a national-security threat. The ministry also accused London of providing bases and logistical facilities for US and Israeli attacks against Iran. That alleged British role remains an Iranian government accusation. The ministry said it would continue measures to protect Iran’s security and interests without providing a comprehensive account of practical enforcement.[1]
