Israel’s first Somaliland ambassador presents credentials

Israel announced that ambassador Michael Lotem presented credentials to Somaliland’s leader in Hargeisa the previous week. The reception follows recognition and earlier steps to establish diplomatic missions. Trade, investment and security feature in the relationship, while Somalia continues to oppose recognition of the territory it regards as part of its own country.

Lotem is received in Hargeisa

Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland, Michael Lotem, presented his credentials to leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi in Hargeisa, the territory’s capital. Israel’s foreign ministry announced the reception on Sunday and placed the ceremony in the previous week. The two sides have identified trade, investment and security cooperation as priorities.[1], [2]

Diplomatic missions follow recognition

Israel recognized Somaliland in December, and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar visited Hargeisa in January. Lotem’s appointment was announced in April. Somaliland opened a mission in West Jerusalem in June. His formal reception follows those earlier steps toward diplomatic representation between Israel and the territory that declared separation from Somalia in 1991.[1]

Somalia maintains its territorial claim

Somalia continues to regard Somaliland as its own territory. The African Union, Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation have supported Somalia’s territorial integrity. Somaliland lies near shipping routes through the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, a backdrop to security discussions. Statements about possible military arrangements have differed, and no basing agreement was independently established.[1]
