2 launchers on Larak Island
A US official said the strike hit 2 launchers on Iran's Larak Island, the first known American strike on Iran since late July. Centcom spokesman Tim Hawkins, quoted by CBS News, said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces had been observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.[1]
The Guards said the attack killed and wounded several people and vowed response and punishment. That account of casualties on Larak Island has not been independently confirmed.[1]
8 intercepts, and an air base the UAE has not confirmed
The Guards later said they had launched an attack on US military targets in Jordan, according to Iranian state media. Jordan's armed forces said air defence systems intercepted 8 missiles that breached the kingdom's airspace at dawn on Monday, in a statement carried by the state Petra News Agency. The details of that attack on Jordan have not been independently confirmed.[1]
Iran's army said it attacked the United Arab Emirates' Al Minhad air base with drones early on Monday, in a statement carried by Iranian state television. The army said the attack targeted locations where US forces and helicopters were stationed, and that it answered the killing of Revolutionary Guards and Iranian civilians on Larak Island. There was no immediate comment from the United Arab Emirates and its defence ministry had not issued a statement. Iranian state television is the government's own outlet, so both the target and the timing rest on the army's account. The same Larak Island strike, in this telling, reopened direct fighting between the two countries after more than a month.[2], [1]
The cost that can be counted
Tim Hawkins described the 2 launchers as a preparation to send rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz; that is the US strike. Jordan's armed forces counted 8 missiles intercepted at dawn. Iran's army said Al Minhad was the answer to deaths on Larak Island, and the United Arab Emirates defence ministry has not issued a statement. The public measure from here is that statement, or Jordan naming where the 8 missiles were launched.[1], [2]
