One video link and two official sentences

India's foreign ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said the government had "no involvement whatsoever in it, neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum". Bangladesh has sought her extradition, and India says the request is "being examined through the legal process".[1]

The event that made those sentences necessary was this: speaking by video link to the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia, the 78-year-old former prime minister Sheikh Hasina said she would return to Bangladesh in December after two years in exile in India, with the exact date to be announced later. She said: "I may be detained, I may be sent to prison. But fear cannot decide my duty to the people." Hasina had been convicted in absentia in Dhaka of incitement, ordering killings and failing to prevent atrocities, and sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.[1]

The two jobs the two sentences do

The first sentence is about content: the words belong to the guest, not to the host. The second is about a decision and does not make one. The formula that hands the request to a legal process refuses Dhaka nothing and grants Dhaka nothing; it leaves the decision to an institution and to an unstated timetable. Together they leave India room between going on hosting Hasina and having to say a clear no to Dhaka.[1]

That room has a cost, and the cost rises with the guest's visibility. Hasina had flown by helicopter to New Delhi after the 2024 student-led uprising; since then a quiet residence was something Dhaka could raise but could hardly press. A video appearance changes that: the quiet residence becomes a dated event that Bangladesh can point to in an official exchange. That is precisely why the ministry's distance from the forum becomes necessary. The announced date is where the limit will show: if a December date is set and the departure is made from Indian territory, the extradition file closes itself; if the date is set and no departure follows, the limit is New Delhi's.[1]
