Retirement follows months of rehabilitation
Swiss alpine skier Michelle Gisin has announced her retirement at 32, ending her attempt to return after a serious training accident. The double Olympic champion had been recovering from the crash for 11 months.[1], [2]
Gisin made the decision public at a press conference on the Titlis. She had crashed during downhill training on the Corviglia course in St Moritz on 11 December 2025, tearing knee ligaments and injuring her wrist and cervical spine. Months of rehabilitation were followed by weight training and a return to snow.[1]
A World Cup comeback could take years
In August, Gisin had said she wanted to decide her future while back on skis. After returning to the slopes, she concluded that a World Cup comeback could require another year or even two. She described emotional weeks of conversations with people close to her and expressed gratitude for her years racing at the highest level.[1]
Gisin plans a new role at the world championships
She intends to remain involved in skiing, supporting her partner Luca De Aliprandini at World Cup races. At February’s world championships in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, she plans to interview athletes in the finish area and take part in evening programmes. She also welcomed being able to choose which slopes to ski for pleasure.[1]
