Australia's all-rounder ends his national career
Glenn Maxwell, Australia's batting and bowling all-rounder, has retired from international cricket.[1], [2]
The decision completes his departure from national-team formats after he stopped playing one-day internationals last year. His final appearance for Australia came against Oman at this year's Twenty20, or T20, World Cup. The 38-year-old will continue playing for Melbourne Stars in Australia's Big Bash League, keeping his club career in the shorter format.[1]
Maxwell backs opportunities for younger players
Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had hoped for a possible farewell at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He had considered preparing for Australia's home T20 series against England in late November, which includes a match in Melbourne. He said he understood the squad's direction and the need to expose emerging players to international pressure ahead of the 2028 Olympics.[1]
World Cup titles mark 286 appearances
Maxwell played 149 one-day internationals, 130 T20 internationals and seven Tests, totalling 286 appearances. He took 136 wickets. He was part of Australia's one-day World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023 and its T20 triumph in 2021. Against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, he overcame injury problems to score an unbeaten 201 from 128 balls and guide Australia to victory in its run chase.[1]
