Barry settles the league meeting
Everton, the Liverpool football club, beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park in the Premier League. Thierno Barry scored the only goal in the second half.[1], [2]
Barry's eighth goal of the season moved Everton into seventh place. The win came four days after they defeated the same opponents 3-1 at home in the League Cup. This time Everton took league points away from Newcastle, recording a third consecutive victory at the ground. David Moyes brought Jarrad Branthwaite back into the starting line-up after he completed concussion protocols, while Harrison Armstrong started in midfield.[1]
George's shot creates the opening
Four minutes after halftime, James Garner sent Tyrique George down the left. Lukas Hornicek failed to hold George's shot, and Barry finished the rebound from close range. Everton then threatened through Branthwaite, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jake O'Brien, with Hornicek making saves. Branthwaite partnered James Tarkowski in central defence as O'Brien moved to right-back. Merlin Röhl was selected ahead of Tyler Dibling on that side.[1]
Everton withstand Newcastle's late pressure
Newcastle pushed for an equaliser late on. Tarkowski cleared from the goal line after Anthony Elanga's attempt, following a header by substitute Yoane Wissa. Jordan Pickford later used his legs to stop Wissa from close range. Jacob Ramsey volleyed narrowly wide before receiving two late yellow cards for challenges on Hayden Hackney and Armstrong. Everton protected the lead as Newcastle finished with ten players.[1]
