Buffalo Bills release C.J. Gardner-Johnson after suspension

Buffalo have released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson after he completed a suspension for spitting towards an opponent. Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone played in his absence against Baltimore. Rookie Jalon Kilgore is another available option in that part of the defence, where Gardner-Johnson had begun the season as a starter.

Bills end Gardner-Johnson’s Buffalo spell

The Buffalo Bills have released C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a safety who plays in the deeper part of an American football defence. The club announced the move on 3 November after the completion of his suspension. Gardner-Johnson joined Buffalo during the offseason and began the campaign as a starter. The announcement removes him from the Bills’ roster without naming a new club.[1], [2]

Suspension followed Raiders incident

Gardner-Johnson served a one-game suspension after spitting towards Las Vegas Raiders player Brock Bowers during the first half of their Week six meeting. The ban kept him out of the Week eight game against Baltimore. Buffalo used Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone at safety during that absence. Both remain available choices in the defensive group after the release.[1]

Buffalo evaluates alternatives with special-teams roles

ESPN reported that Buffalo wanted a longer look at its other options after their work against Baltimore. Rookie Jalon Kilgore is another player available at safety. The outlet also reported that Hamlin, Stone and Kilgore offered more special-teams value. Gardner-Johnson had not taken special-teams snaps during his early-season appearances. Those units handle the kicking phases separately from the usual offensive and defensive line-ups.[1]
