Tenerife announce De Miguel’s death

Football club Tenerife announced that forward Jesús de Miguel had died in hospital after a collision during the match against Andorra. The incident happened in Monday’s game, and the club announced his death on Tuesday.[1], [2]

De Miguel was pursuing a long ball near the centre of the pitch when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono’s knee struck him. He lost consciousness and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the field. Medical staff restored his pulse before taking him to Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Hospital in Santa Cruz, Spain. His condition deteriorated overnight and he did not regain consciousness.[1]

Cup fixtures are postponed

The match was stopped during the emergency and never completed. Spain’s football federation postponed Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches, the men’s and women’s cup competitions. Tenerife also requested postponements of their Saturday game against Granada and cup tie against Badajoz. Andorra asked for their match against Mallorca to be moved.[1]

An investigation opens after the collision

A judicial investigation was opened. Prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui said assessing criminal responsibility would be difficult because the collision occurred during play. De Miguel had played for several clubs before joining Tenerife in 2025. He had been Castellón’s leading scorer during their promotion season in 2024.[1]
