Barclays expands Claude across engineering and banking operations
Barclays expanded its Anthropic collaboration to bring Claude further into software engineering, legacy-system modernization and global operations. The bank targets adoption by half its developers by year-end. Existing uses include an internal knowledge assistant and a global-markets workflow that classifies and routes client emails. Barclays says these deployments retain human oversight within its risk and governance framework.

Barclays expands Claude beyond existing workflows
The bank Barclays expanded its collaboration with Anthropic on 1 October to deploy Claude across software engineering and global operations. The rollout includes legacy-system modernization. The bank targets Claude Code adoption among half its developers by year-end, extending the use of AI within the tools its employees already work with.[1], [2]
The knowledge assistant searches internal information
The expansion builds on Barclays’ knowledge assistant, launched in the previous year. It retrieves relevant information from internal sources and uses it to answer staff questions. Barclays reports that the assistant has reached 16,000 employee users and one million searches. The bank describes this information access as supporting service to roughly 20 million customers in the United Kingdom.[1]
Claude routes client inquiries in global markets
In global markets, Claude classifies client emails, enriches their content and sends them to the appropriate teams. Barclays puts that workflow at approximately 120,000 emails a day. The bank says implementation remains within its risk-management and governance framework, with human oversight. Barclays’ co-chief operating officers Anne Marie Darling and Craig Bright describe the collaboration as part of changing working practices across the bank. Engineering adoption is expected to reach a large majority of developers next year.[1]
