YMX and Outrider plan self-driving trucks for customer logistics yards

YMX Logistics and Outrider signed a five-year agreement to expand self-driving electric trucks in customer logistics yards. YMX will finance and operate the fleets and provide on-site support, while Outrider supplies remote monitoring and technical assistance. The trucks move trailers and position them at loading docks. The companies plan initial deployments this year across food, retail, consumer-goods and automotive customers.

YMX takes responsibility for customer yard fleets

YMX Logistics, a yard-logistics provider, and autonomous-truck developer Outrider announced a five-year commercial agreement on 1 October. YMX will operate and support the Outrider System in enterprise customers’ logistics yards. The partnership expands the planned use of self-driving electric yard trucks at YMX sites, where vehicles move trailers between loading docks and parking areas.[1], [2]

The trucks move trailers alongside other traffic

Outrider’s trucks are designed to work in mixed-traffic yards shared with staff and manually driven vehicles. Their tasks include finding and moving trailers, hitching and unhitching them, and positioning them at dock doors or parking locations. A robotic system connects and disconnects trailer brake lines. The system also tracks trailer inventory in real time and monitors the charge status of electric vehicles.[1]

The companies divide financing and technical support

Under the non-exclusive agreement, YMX leads customer implementations, finances and operates autonomous fleets, and provides on-site support. Outrider assists deployment and supplies ongoing remote monitoring and technical help. The companies jointly handle site planning and operating processes, with integration into existing yard, warehouse and transportation-management software. Initial deployments are planned this year for food and beverage, retail, consumer packaged goods and automotive customers. YMX uses capacity-based pricing rather than hourly rates.[1]
