Alexa adds shopping by text for invited US customers
Amazon has begun inviting US customers to shop through text conversations with Alexa. The assistant can look for products, build a cart and handle purchase requests, while also accepting images. Access starts with a small group, and the company is introducing conversation continuity between messaging, its shopping app, website and Alexa devices.

A phone number opens the conversation
Amazon began introducing text shopping with Alexa on November 6, starting with invited customers in the United States. Those receiving an invitation accept the terms and connect a phone number. The assistant then appears as Alexa Shopping in their contacts. Customers can send ordinary messages asking it to find products, prepare a cart or handle a purchase request.[1], [2]
Photos become shopping requests
The service accepts pictures as well as written requests. Amazon’s examples include using a recipe photograph to add ingredients to a cart and an outfit image to locate similar products. Several needs can go into one message. The assistant can compare products using reviews, details and prices, maintain grocery and gift lists, and monitor selected items for price drops.[1]
Requests carry across Amazon services
Amazon is also introducing continuity between text messages, its shopping app, website and Alexa devices. A request started in one channel can continue in another. The company plans to put order updates and delivery notices in the same conversation. It says preferences such as organic or vegan choices inform later recommendations. Amazon plans broader US access over the coming weeks.[1]
