Houthi Red Sea advance reaches the Bab el-Mandeb islands
A Houthi advance along Yemen's Red Sea coast was reported to have reached Zuqar and Perim, while more than 2,000 government troops were besieged on the Hanish islands. The territorial-control claims have not been independently verified. The United Nations says at least 46,000 people were displaced across the wider conflict area in one week, adding humanitarian pressure around a strategically important shipping passage.
Husqvarna wins first robotics exemption from FCC covered list following national security review
The US Federal Communications Commission granted conditional approvals for four Husqvarna robotic mower platforms, marking the first robotics exemption from its foreign covered list since restrictions took effect. The clearance followed a national-security review by the US Department of War, permitting the Swedish manufacturer to import and market new platforms alongside previously authorized models.
India's foreign exchange reserves hit a record $785.7 billion
The Reserve Bank of India's weekly supplement put the country's total foreign exchange reserves at $785.706 billion on 4 September. Foreign currency assets accounted for the entire $44.903 billion weekly increase. The rupee values of gold, special drawing rights and the IMF reserve position declined, while foreign currency assets remained the largest reserve component.
Iran is short of hundreds of medicines as Pezeshkian calls the pressure dangerous
Iran's pharmacists association says about 400 medicines now unavailable in the country are produced domestically, and roughly 90 count as essential or life-saving. Euronews reported sharp price rises, including insulin up six times over in a year, and said patients pay more than 70 per cent of health costs directly. In New Delhi before the BRICS summit, President Masoud Pezeshkian said pressure on Iran had reached a critical and dangerous stage after United States and Israeli military action.
Israel-Lebanon talks delayed as massive border explosions prompt shift to Washington
Planned Israeli-Lebanese negotiations in Rome have been postponed to October, with ambassadors redirected to Washington next week. The diplomatic delay follows massive Israeli detonations of alleged Hezbollah tunnels in southern Lebanon, prompting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to rule out new negotiations for now.
Japan's large-firm sentiment index returns to plus 5.3
Japan's Finance Ministry and Cabinet Office survey showed the business conditions index for large firms rising from minus 0.5 to plus 5.3 in July-September. Manufacturing and nonmanufacturing readings were positive, while the small-firm index remained at minus 10.9. Companies across all size groups expect fiscal 2026 sales, profits and capital investment to increase.
Jupiter's magnetic holes last nearly 40 minutes in Juno data
10 years of Juno measurements show linear magnetic holes around Jupiter lasting nearly 40 minutes in some cases. These plasma structures involve a drop in field strength with little change in direction. They appear in both the magnetosphere and the surrounding magnetosheath. The study also finds frequent energetic-electron enhancements, allowing comparison of plasma behavior across planetary environments.
Klobuchar and Thune's AI catastrophic-risk bill stalls over liability and testing language
A bipartisan US Senate draft led by Amy Klobuchar and John Thune would place a legal duty on AI labs to mitigate catastrophic harms, but POLITICO reports the parties remain far apart and the text is not final. Nextgov/FCW reports that Maria Cantwell contests the testing framework, which would let companies self-test and present results to the Commerce secretary, while she wants mandatory vetting by national laboratories.
Late Jurassic ichthyosaur ribs from Svalbard were denser than toothed-whale ribs
Ribs from two Late Jurassic ichthyosaurs found on Svalbard were more compact than ribs from a beluga and a harbor porpoise. Researchers at the University of Oslo Natural History Museum read the extra density as ballast that could have helped the reptiles start a dive against the buoyancy of air-filled lungs. That ballast reading is a proposal: ichthyosaurs inherited a lizard-like sideways spine and a vertical tail, which made the first downward angle harder than it is for whales.
LinkedIn trains its job-search ranking model eight times faster via multi-teacher distillation
LinkedIn built a job-search ranker containing 0.6 billion parameters, using supervisory signals from several larger models. It mixed teacher answers prepared in advance with answers generated during training, reducing total training time eightfold. The company also reported large gains in ranking throughput and NDCG@10 on its own system.
