The material of repetition
For Junior Boys' new song Underneath the Moon, the named instrument of production is an old Tascam tape machine. Jeremy Greenspan says he worked with loops in response to the horror film Skinamarink. The film reference enters the process of making sound. That is the most concrete choice in The Gore announcement: the musician identifies a procedure through which a cinematic influence becomes musical material.[1]
The album announced by Greenspan and Matt Didemus for February 12, 2027 accompanies 2022's Waiting Game. Greenspan describes an initial idea involving the loose construction of Fresh and Here, My Dear alongside Pan Sonic's sonic language. That proposal puts two arranging interests together: allowing pieces room to find their shape and defining the electronic material they work with. It offers a more useful starting point than assigning the whole album a single genre.[1]
A tape loop makes a returning fragment of sound available as compositional material. The musical question suggested by Greenspan's named procedure is what repetition holds steady within the song and what changes around it. That offers one possible link with the film. Another explanation is available: the old machine may provide a desired timbre independently of the cinematic reference. The announced method gives the listener these two possibilities to consider within the same song.[1]
Film first, album next
The first announced listening events also choose a particular order. The Brooklyn, Seattle and Toronto programmes begin with Michael Snow's Wavelength, continue with the whole of The Gore accompanied by original visuals, and end with questions for Greenspan. The programme shares the forthcoming recording from beginning to end rather than presenting it as a live concert. Film comes before the playback; discussion follows the music.[1]
That sequence may direct attention towards relationships between songs: a film first, then an uninterrupted album, and conversation only afterwards. The arrangement shared by the three events defines a way of encountering The Gore as an album. The visuals may also guide what listeners notice, so the sequence could establish a cinematic frame as much as foreground details of sound. Tape loops in production and the passage from film to album in presentation give two concrete approaches to the way Junior Boys organise musical time.[1]
