The changing job of accompaniment

Harry Styles gave Isn’t She Lovely a different job at Madison Square Garden. Stevie Wonder’s song had introduced a teenage voice during his 2010 X Factor audition. On October 30, the penultimate night of a 30-show residency, it became part of a programme recalling the singer’s history. Repertoire supplied the connection between those two settings.[1]

The extended audition footage begins with Train’s Hey, Soul Sister. Simon Cowell stops the backing track and asks to hear Styles without music; Isn’t She Lovely follows. Removing accompaniment changes the task imposed on the singer. That footage cannot establish the complete arrangement used at the current concert. The useful comparison concerns the song’s function in the audition and its placement in the present programme.[1]

Pairing the song and the costume

Earlier Harryween choices make that programming practice concrete. In 2021, the Dorothy costume accompanied Somewhere Over the Rainbow, followed the next night by a clown costume and Toxic. In 2022, Danny Zuko’s appearance was paired with Hopelessly Devoted to You. Moving from Elvis Presley to the teenage Styles costume in the current show makes song selection part of the staging. The costume acquires musical meaning through the work placed beside it.[1]

The value of this return lies in giving one song a defined place inside a long concert run. Isn’t She Lovely connects the audience’s memory to the singer’s point of arrival. It can also be read more simply as a recreation of familiar television. What matters musically is the scale of that return within the programme. A song once used to introduce an unknown voice now offers another entrance to a voice the audience already recognises.[1]
