Returning voices
Whitney Peak opens the sequence with The Raven I and returns with The Raven II and The Raven III. In the announced 29-track companion to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, those recurring entries offer the listener a thread through a large cast. The order matters alongside the names. Executive producer Dave Cobb’s program places new songs and different versions of existing recordings within a single listening sequence.[1]
Ella Langley’s Here Then We’re Gone and Tyler Childers’ Old Money are among the new contributions. Jennifer Lawrence sings Deep in the Meadow, while Mckenna Grace contributes Half Alive. The actors have specific musical assignments here: named songs and credited performances. Reading the album only through its film cast would understate the part played by musicians drawn from rock, country and Americana.[1]
Kacey Musgraves’ Ruthless and Stevie Nicks’ Doing the Best That I Can appear in Arena Mix versions. Depeche Mode and KÁRYYN’s Survive also arrives reworked. Each choice relocates an existing song within a different context. Beside the new material, these versions make arrangement and selection part of what is new about the collection.[1]
A live performance at the end
The closing track is The Cure’s Alone, recorded live in Berlin in 2022. Placing a concert performance at the end brings another performance setting into an album containing new studio material. That can be read as an attempt to build a listening program around the film’s world. Reaching the separate audiences of a broad artist roster is another plausible explanation; the variety of the list leaves room for both readings.[1]
MCA has dated the song collection for November 13. James Newton Howard’s original score album is scheduled for November 20, alongside the film. Listeners therefore have two separate programs: a sequence built from singers, songs and reworked recordings, and Howard’s music composed for the screen. That distinction gives each album a different basis for musical coherence.[1]
