Clayface opens at the top of Friday’s chart

Clayface, director James Watkins’s body-horror film, led the North American box office on its opening Friday with 10.4 million dollars. That figure includes Thursday previews. Warner Bros. released the film in more than 3,400 cinemas; Variety gives the location count as 3,458. The projected weekend total was around 24 million dollars, compared with the studio’s initial expectation of 25 million dollars to 30 million dollars.[1], [2]

The production has a reported budget of 44 million dollars. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, an actor whose face is disfigured and who turns to a scientist played by Naomi Ackie. Audiences gave it an A-minus CinemaScore. Friday international receipts were 4.3 million dollars, reported separately from the North American takings.[2]

An expanded documentary release takes second place

You Can See Everything placed second on Friday with 6.14 million dollars, according to Variety. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary about Elizabeth Holmes widened to 2,655 cinemas after opening in 855. Its North American total reached 31.7 million dollars. The Hollywood Reporter rounded the Friday result to 6.1 million dollars and the current footprint to about 2,600 locations.[1], [2]

A24’s documentary was projected to take about 20 million dollars over its second weekend. It had opened with 15 million dollars. Clayface’s new release and the documentary’s wider run occupied the first two places in Friday’s developing weekend chart.[2]

Wildwood follows in third place

Travis Knight’s stop-motion feature Wildwood ranked third, earning 4.28 million dollars on Friday in Variety’s figures, with an estimated 11.2 million dollars for the weekend. Its story follows a teenage girl entering a forest to rescue her younger brother. Wicker earned 2.36 million dollars on Friday and Street Fighter took 2.34 million dollars. Their weekend forecasts were 5.5 million dollars and 8.4 million dollars respectively; none of those projections was a final Sunday result.[1]
