Groff will perform the play alone

Jonathan Groff will return to Broadway in The Amish Project, a solo play by Jessica Dickey. Performances are scheduled to begin on February 10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. Producers Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy announced the production, which Sarna Lapine will direct.[1], [2]

Dickey’s play returns to a Pennsylvania tragedy

Dickey drew inspiration from the 2006 tragedy at an Amish school in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, close to where Groff grew up. The production announcement describes compassion and forgiveness as subjects of the work. Groff said Lapine sent him the play last year and that reading it affected him deeply. Dickey described it as the piece that began her playwriting career.[1]

Earlier stagings reached theatres across the United States

The work developed through the New York International Fringe Festival and Cherry Lane Theatre before its Off Broadway production at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009. Later productions included theatres in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Groff recently played Bobby Darin in Just in Time, also serving as a producer, and won a Tony Award for Merrily We Roll Along. The Broadway production’s design team will be announced later.[1]
