Melanie Lynskey takes Erin Patterson role in Mushroom Murders

Melanie Lynskey has joined Mushroom Murders as Erin Patterson and as an executive producer. Paramount+ has commissioned the six-part drama from Soapbox Pictures, centring the story on the 97 days between a fatal Australian lunch and Patterson’s arrest. Anya Beyersdorf, Daina Reid and Deb Balderstone created the production, with Reid directing the entire series.

Six episodes follow the interval before arrest

Paramount+, the streaming service, has commissioned Mushroom Murders: There’s More to Unearth, with Melanie Lynskey playing Erin Patterson. Lynskey also joins the executive producers of the limited drama. The story follows the interval between the lunch Patterson served in Australia in 2023 and her arrest, rather than beginning with the subsequent criminal proceedings. The announced span is 97 days. Soapbox Pictures is making the six episodes, with Daina Reid assigned to direct the whole series.[1], [2]

The Australian lunch at the centre of the drama

Patterson served individual beef wellingtons to her estranged husband’s parents and their relatives at her home in Victoria. The meal killed three guests. Paramount’s synopsis describes the allegation that toxic death cap mushrooms had been added to the food. The Guardian identifies those who died as Don and Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson. Her husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after spending weeks in hospital. Patterson received a life sentence in September 2025 for the murders and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson. She is appealing against her convictions. The drama revisits the events preceding her arrest.[2]

Beyersdorf and Reid lead the creative team

Anya Beyersdorf, Reid and Deb Balderstone created the series. Beyersdorf’s earlier work includes Fake, Apple Cider Vinegar and Fires; Reid’s includes The Handmaid’s Tale and Run Rabbit Run. The scripts bring Beyersdorf together with Dianne Taylor, whose credits include After the Party, and Belinda Chayko, whose work includes Fires. Balderstone’s credits include Dustfall, Ticket to Paradise and Palm Beach. She executive produces alongside Xavier Marchand, while Sophia Mogford takes that role for Paramount+. Beyersdorf and Reid are also executive producers. Federation International handles the worldwide rights, and Paramount+ acquired the series from that distributor. Lynskey’s screen credits include Yellowjackets and The Last of Us. She has also appeared in Two and a Half Men and But I’m a Cheerleader. Marchand’s earlier productions include A Gentleman in Moscow and Spotlight. The Guardian places the series on Paramount+’s 2027 schedule.[1], [2]
