Nine Perfect Lives debuts with a song born across two cities

Hello Mary members Helena Straight and Stella Wave have released Die as the first Nine Perfect Lives single on AD 93. Written while they lived in Los Angeles and Brooklyn, the song grew from their efforts to keep working together across the distance. A Milo Hume video accompanies the release, with support dates for Friko and Lime Garden also announced.

Hello Mary musicians launch their joint project

Helena Straight and Stella Wave, members of the Brooklyn indie-rock trio Hello Mary in the United States, have released Die under the name Nine Perfect Lives. The single arrived on 27 October through the music label AD 93. In Detroit, public radio station WDET opened Ryan Patrick Hooper’s In the Groove programme with Die on its release day, introducing the musicians as a new Brooklyn-based project. They began the side project together last year, and Die was the first song they completed for it. Its release is accompanied by a video directed by Milo Hume. The pair’s collaboration began while they were living on opposite sides of the country, with Straight in Los Angeles and Wave remaining in Brooklyn.[1], [2]

A demo grows out of separation

Straight says she had not decided whether or when she would move back to New York. Keeping in touch and continuing their work required deliberate effort. She wrote and recorded the first demo in a few hours, then recognised it as a response to Wave’s distress and confusion over her sudden departure. In Straight’s account, developing that demo together came easily and strengthened a creative bond that had been strained within Hello Mary.[1], [2]

Friko and Lime Garden dates accompany the release

Nine Perfect Lives’ announced live schedule includes support appearances with Friko in the closing days of October. The listed dates begin on 27 October at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, followed by Terminal West in Atlanta on 28 October. The run then reaches the Blue Room at Third Man Records in Nashville on 30 October and A&R Music Bar in Columbus on 31 October. Two further appearances bring the musicians back to Brooklyn in November. On both 6 and 7 November, they are listed to open for Lime Garden at Elsewhere Zone 1.[1]
