Documenta 16 adds four curators before its Kassel exhibition

Documenta 16 has appointed Raven Chacon as curator-at-large and Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal as advisers to Naomi Beckwith’s team. The appointments bring experience in music, African and diaspora art, Roma cultural institutions and technology to preparations for the Kassel exhibition, scheduled for June 12 to September 19, 2027.

Chacon joins as curator-at-large

Documenta, the contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, has expanded the team preparing its 16th edition. Artistic director Naomi Beckwith announced the appointments on October 29: composer and installation artist Raven Chacon becomes curator-at-large, while Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal join as curatorial advisers. They will work with the existing core team on the exhibition’s artistic programme.[1], [2]

Music and diaspora art enter the expanded team

Chacon was born in Fort Defiance on the Navajo Nation and won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2022. His work with the Postcommodity art collective included Documenta 14. He also mentors high-school students writing string quartets through the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project. Bonsu, a British-Ghanaian art historian based in London, is Tate Modern’s senior curator of international art, Africa and diaspora, working across exhibitions, collections and research.[1]

Junghaus and Segal bring institutional experience

Junghaus helped establish the Gallery8 arts space in Budapest and was founding executive director of the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture in Berlin from 2017 to 2025. She curated the first Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Segal specialises in art, technology and society, works at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and chairs the LG Guggenheim Award. The four join Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro and Xiaoyu Weng. Documenta 16 runs from June 12 to September 19, 2027.[1]
