MoMA, Pompidou and M+ plan long-term collection loans

New York’s MoMA, Paris’s Centre Pompidou and Hong Kong’s M+ have formed a cultural alliance that extends collection sharing, exhibitions and research across three continents. M+ works are due at MoMA from late 2027, followed by a Pompidou gallery in 2028. A joint exhibition will travel to all three institutions within five years.

Collection loans will begin in 2027

The Museum of Modern Art in New York, known as MoMA, the Centre Pompidou modern art institution in Paris and Hong Kong’s M+ museum of visual culture announced a cultural alliance on October 30. The framework covers collection sharing, jointly organised exhibitions, research and conservation. Their directors signed the agreement at M+; each institution will retain its own identity and independence.[1], [2]

Major works from M+ are expected to enter MoMA’s collection galleries on long-term loan in late 2027. A gallery devoted to Centre Pompidou is planned there for 2028, with parallel arrangements being developed at the partner museums. Pompidou’s Paris building is closed for refurbishment and scheduled to reopen in 2030.[1]

Curators will prepare a travelling exhibition

Within five years, the partners intend to present an exhibition exploring the contemporary, drawing on all three collections and appearing at each museum. Curators from M+ and Centre Pompidou will also join MoMA’s C-MAP research programme, which examines art histories beyond North America and Western Europe. M+ holds approximately 8,000 objects, including contemporary Chinese art developed through Uli Sigg’s donations.[1]

A monthly committee builds on earlier agreements

A steering committee of directors, department heads and curators will meet monthly, with the first annual in-person meeting at MoMA in November. Its remit includes conservation and professional development alongside exhibitions. The alliance builds on a February 2025 memorandum between M+ and MoMA and a separate multiyear M+–Pompidou partnership announced this year.[1]
