A teenage audition returns to Madison Square Garden
Harry Styles performed Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely at New York’s Madison Square Garden on October 30, dressed as his teenage self at a 2010 television audition. The first of the weekend’s Harryween concerts revisited his appearance on The X Factor, the singing competition. Styles also repeated his remark about working in a bakery. The show was the penultimate night of his 30-concert residency at the venue.[1], [2]
The audition preceded One Direction
Styles was sixteen when he auditioned. The original television segment showed him singing Wonder’s song without instrumental accompaniment. The X Factor released extended footage in 2022 showing an earlier attempt at Train’s Hey, Soul Sister, interrupted when Simon Cowell asked to hear him without the backing music. Styles advanced in the competition before being grouped with Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction.[1]
Harryween costumes revisit earlier shows
Styles initially wore an Elvis Presley-inspired white jumpsuit, cape and gold sunglasses. His band and dancers dressed as versions of him from different career moments. Harryween began at Madison Square Garden in 2021, when he appeared as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on one night and a clown on the next. In Los Angeles in 2022, he dressed as Danny Zuko from Grease and sang Hopelessly Devoted to You.[1], [2]
