Frank Miller teams with Milo Manara on a Sin City story

Frank Miller is developing a Sin City story with Milo Manara, an exception to his usual practice of drawing the series himself. His account also described how he separates writing from the visual work of drawing.

Manara draws a new Sin City story

Frank Miller is developing a new Sin City story with Milo Manara. Miller discussed the collaboration at Lucca Comics & Games, where he appeared for the fortieth anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns. He said Manara had asked him on stage to write a Sin City story for him, describing the partnership as an exception to drawing the stories himself.[1], [2]

Miller separates writing from drawing

Miller described a working method that separates verbal decisions about plot and dialogue from the visual work of illustration. He listens to street sounds or NPR news while drawing. He works out the decisive elements on tracing paper before executing the finished drawing in a more relaxed state, allowing the visual side of his work to take over.[1]

Lucca hosts American Genius

The Lucca programme included Silenn Thomas’s documentary Frank Miller: American Genius, providing an occasion for Miller to discuss his profession and screen adaptations. He argued that comics risk losing their identity when they take too many cues from movies. Discussing Sin City’s Marv and Hartigan, he described exploring the human spirit through heroes’ ugliness and suffering.[1]
