A year of career support

Britain’s screen academy BAFTA has announced 21 participants in its UK Breakthrough programme for film, television and games. Deaf filmmaker Ted Evans is among those selected. The programme offers mentoring, professional introductions and career development throughout the year, together with BAFTA membership. Netflix supports the initiative, which brings emerging practitioners from the three screen sectors into the same career-support scheme.[1], [2]

Actors and filmmakers

The acting selections include Ella Bruccoleri for The Other Bennet Sister, Izuka Hoyle for Prisoner and Sophie Stone for Falling. Documentary filmmaker Myrid Carten joins following A Want in Her. Other participants include Emmerdale writer Yassmin Abdel-Magied and The Incomer writer-director Louis Paxton. Five selected creatives work in games, including Eloise Singer, Husban Siddiqi and Kate Killick.[1]

The programme’s next steps

Breakthrough is now in its 13th year, with Netflix returning as supporter for a seventh consecutive year. Its past participants include Florence Pugh, Tom Holland and Jessie Buckley. More than 330 people have taken part worldwide since the initiative began. The UK announcement precedes a separate US cohort, which BAFTA North America is expected to announce later in November.[1]
