A cowboy portrait made in eastern Morocco

Katie Hitchcock-Smith has won the Winston Taylor Photo Portrait Prize with Moroccan (Amazigh) Cowboys.[1], [2]

The double portrait shows Nour and Mohmed and belongs to Tajine Westerns, a series made during an artists’ residency near Erfoud in eastern Morocco. The photograph was taken in 2025. The prize exhibition opens at London’s National Portrait Gallery on 5 November and runs until 17 January.[1]

An eleven-hour journey across the Atlas Mountains

To reach the location, Hitchcock-Smith travelled by bus for eleven hours across the Atlas Mountains. The western-themed shoot was collaborative. She brought the cowboy hat from home, while the jacket and tent came from a local market. The resulting image places two named sitters at the centre of a staged scene assembled from clothing and objects gathered for the photograph.[1]

Devon and Cuba portraits take the other places

Max Pattenden took second prize with Havannah, Lee Moor, showing a ten-year-old girl from a village beside Dartmoor National Park in England. Third prize went to James Clifford Kent’s portrait of sixteen-year-old Cuban fencer Neisser Yoel Gálvez Tabares at home in Pinar del Río. Marcie Docherty received the photographic commission prize for PE, a staged group image using American football clothing.[1]
