China August retail sales slowed to 0.4 percent as industrial output hit 5.2 percent
CNBC said China August retail sales slowed to 0.4 percent from 0.6 percent in July, while industrial output accelerated to 5.2 percent from 4.5 percent. The National Bureau of Statistics bulletin said industrial value-added rose 5.2 percent in real terms, 0.7 points faster than July. NBD put August retail sales at 3.9824 trillion yuan. The bureau wrote of an acute imbalance between strong supply and weak demand.

Retail 0.4, industry 5.2
A 15.09.2026 report said August retail sales slowed from 0.6 percent in July to 0.4 percent. Industrial output accelerated from 4.5 percent in July to 5.2 percent and beat a 4.8 percent forecast. The urban survey-based unemployment rate ticked up to 5.3 percent from 5.2 percent. The bureau wrote of an acute domestic imbalance between strong supply and weak demand and said the external drag had intensified; it called for stronger macro adjustments and support for domestic demand. Second-quarter growth of 4.3 percent had already sat below the annual target band of 4.5-5 percent.[1], [2]
The bulletin: 3.9824 trillion yuan of retail sales
NBD's 15 September report, framed as a National Bureau of Statistics readout, said social consumer-goods retail sales in August were 3982.4 billion yuan, up 0.4 percent year on year and down 0.13 percent month on month. Urban units sold 3445.7 billion yuan, up 0.2 percent; rural 536.7 billion, up 1.6 percent. Goods retail rose 0.3 percent and catering 1.1 percent. Communications equipment at units above the quota rose 27.3 percent.[2]
Industrial value-added 0.7 points faster than July
The bureau bulletin dated 15 September 10:00 said August industrial value-added rose 5.2 percent in real terms, 0.7 percentage points faster than July, and 0.54 percent from July. January-August growth was 5.3 percent. Mining fell 1.4 percent, manufacturing rose 6.1 percent, and utilities rose 4.9 percent. Equipment manufacturing rose 12.1 percent and high-tech manufacturing 16.7 percent. Among 41 industries, 29 expanded. New-energy vehicle output was 1.647 million, up 21.9 percent.[3], [1]
