Qantas aims to sell New York-Sydney tickets next August

Vanessa Hudson said Qantas plans to put tickets on sale next August for a New York-Sydney flight of about 18 hours, with the service planned for 2028. A London-Sydney flight of about 20 hours is planned for the following October. Perth-London already runs more than 17 hours. The aircraft is an Airbus A350-1000 with an extra fuel tank. The Financial Times says Qantas is pushing ahead with the ultra-long flights even though fuel prices are high.

Tickets aimed at next August

Vanessa Hudson said Qantas plans to put tickets on sale next August for a New York-Sydney flight of about 18 hours. The service is planned for 2028. The Financial Times says the airline is pushing ahead with new ultra-long flights despite high fuel prices. The two accounts are the same programme: a dated sales plan on one side, and a decision to continue while fuel is expensive on the other.[1], [2]

London-Sydney follows in October

A London-Sydney flight of about 20 hours is planned for the following October, CNBC reports. Perth-London already runs more than 17 hours, so the airline is extending a pattern it already flies rather than inventing ultra-long haul from a standing start.[1]

An A350 with an extra tank

The aircraft is an Airbus A350-1000 with an extra fuel tank, CNBC reports. That tank is the hardware behind the 18-hour and 20-hour plans. The Financial Times headline does not add a fare or a fuel bill. It only records that the flights are going ahead while fuel is expensive. The airline is extending a pattern it already flies, not inventing range from a standing start.[1], [2]
