A deadly Israeli strike on a Gaza police station clouded ceasefire hopes, while Australia sharply condemned Israel's decision not to prosecute anyone over the 2024 killing of aid workers.

Gaza strikes strain ceasefire

Israeli strikes on a Gaza City police station and Nuseirat killed at least ten people, including eight police officers and a 13-year-old girl. The violence occurred just days after the US envoy urged a reduction in attacks. The ceasefire process that began in October 2024 appears completely stalled over disagreements regarding the sequencing of Hamas disarmament and Israeli military withdrawal. Relief organizations warn that intensifying military operations are severely choking humanitarian efforts on the ground.[1]

Australia condemns Israeli decision

The humanitarian dimension of the conflict escalated into a diplomatic crisis when Israel announced it would not pursue criminal prosecutions over the April 2024 killing of World Central Kitchen worker Zomi Frankcom and six colleagues. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed outrage, stating the decision fell far short of expected accountability and calling its timing on World Humanitarian Day especially insulting. Wong emphasized that Canberra will continue pressing for justice and summon Israel's ambassador.[2]

International expectations and pressure

The ongoing civilian toll on the ground and the lack of penal consequences for past military errors are simultaneously reinforcing international pressure on Israel. As diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting stall, allied nations and relief organizations are increasingly challenging how operations are conducted. These concurrent developments indicate a widening gap between military actions and international expectations as the humanitarian crisis deepens.[1], [2]
