Sobyanin called 450 drones the largest strike yet on Moscow

Moscow's mayor said 450 drones headed for the capital were shot down overnight and called the wave the most massive attack yet. The regional governor said two civilians were killed and 20 people were wounded. Ukraine's president said Kyiv hit a key oil site and a logistics hub as Russia closed a three-day Duma vote.

450 drones toward the capital on election weekend

Sergei Sobyanin said 450 drones heading for the capital had been shot down in what he called the most massive attack, the BBC's 20 September 2026 account. Al Jazeera recorded him saying more than 450 drones had been heading for Moscow, that more than 1,600 had been intercepted since Saturday, and that the wave was planned to disrupt Russia's three-day parliamentary vote. He added that the enemy did not succeed. Both desks treat the mayor's intercept count as the size of the overnight barrage on the city, not as Ukraine's launch total, and they date the same Sunday morning.[1], [2]

Sofyino and Orekhovo-Zuevo carried the civilian deaths

The BBC named regional head Andrei Vorobyev saying a 44-year-old woman was killed in Sofyino on Sunday after a drone hit a three-storey residential building, with another five people including two children injured there, and that an elderly man died after a private house was hit in the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, with 20 people wounded across the wider Moscow region. Al Jazeera reported the same two-dead toll from Russian officials and added that a fire at a 21-storey building forced 400 people to leave. Russia was on the last day of its three-day Duma vote while those local figures were issued.[1], [2]

Zelensky named oil and logistics as the targets

President Volodymyr Zelensky told the BBC that Kyiv had hit a key Russian oil facility and a logistics site in the region with drones and missiles, representing billions of dollars that sustain the war machine. Al Jazeera recorded the same pairing as an oil-industry site and a logistics facility. Sobyanin said a drone had struck a building near one of the capital's boulevards and the oil refinery; Ukrainian military officials told the BBC three key units there were damaged and that the site supplies more than a third of the Moscow region's fuel. Neither desk independently verified the overnight social-media explosion videos.[2], [1]
