5 opposition candidates secured Czech Senate seats in the first round as counting continued. Jan Sobotka and Zbyněk Linhart were among the winners. Opposition candidates secure first-round seats

5 opposition candidates secured Czech Senate seats in the first round as counting continued on Saturday. They were Jan Grolich in Vyškov, Tomáš Fiala in Strakonice, Jan Grulich in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, Zbyněk Linhart in Děčín and Jan Sobotka in Trutnov.[1]

Jan Sobotka and Zbyněk Linhart, candidates of the opposition Mayors and Independents movement, known as STAN, won seats outright. Movement leader Vít Rakušan welcomed the provisional outcome during a Radiožurnál interview while urging completion of the count.[1], [2]

Runoffs decide the remaining contests

At the counting stage described by ČTK, STAN and ANO were advancing in 13 constituencies each, while the Civic Democratic Party, or ODS, had finalists in 9. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s governing ANO movement faces opposition parties seeking to maintain the Senate’s role as a counterweight to his government. Rakušan argued that the upper house was likely to retain that function; the remaining contests still depended on the runoffs.[1]

Turnout remains provisional

Provisional Senate turnout approached 43 per cent. Political scientists interviewed during the count stressed that the chamber’s composition depended on next week’s voting. Police reported no serious disruption of the overall electoral process. First-round victories settle individual seats, while the unresolved races leave the final balance open.[1]
