Liverpool reverse the score before and after the interval

Liverpool beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield in the Champions League. The home side recovered from a two-goal deficit to win a match in which the visitors remained within reach until the closing stages.[1], [2]

Georges Mikautadze scored the opening goal after a poor header from Virgil van Dijk. Sergi Cardona then doubled Villarreal’s advantage. Liverpool began the recovery when Alexis Mac Allister headed in a corner delivered by Kostas Tsimikas. Ronald Araujo equalised in first-half stoppage time following work from Rio Ngumoha, bringing the hosts level before the break.[1]

Mac Allister scores twice as Wirtz adds the fourth

Mac Allister scored again after half-time, with Ngumoha creating the opportunity. Florian Wirtz came on at the interval and added Liverpool’s fourth goal with a left-footed finish. Villarreal responded late through Tani Oluwaseyi, reducing the difference to one goal, but Liverpool held on. Peter Gulacsi was in goal for the visitors.[1]

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola highlighted Ngumoha’s growing comfort on the right wing and his ability to add left-footed shooting to his game. Villarreal’s attacking left-back also gave the winger defensive work to do. Iraola said Ngumoha was becoming able to sustain longer spells on the pitch as he continued to develop.[1]

Villarreal rue the equaliser just before half-time

Iraola also praised Ngumoha’s decision to keep playing rather than go down looking for a penalty during the move for Mac Allister’s goal. The manager described a player eager to improve and add elements to his game, after the winger helped create Liverpool’s route back into the contest.[1]

Villarreal coach Iñigo Pérez identified the equaliser just before the interval as the decisive moment. He said his team had played well in the opening half, but conceding then affected their emotions while encouraging Liverpool. Pérez maintained that Villarreal stayed in the match until the end. He said small details become decisive at elite level and his players needed to correct them to win at major away grounds.[1]
