Yalçın takes charge of Turkey’s senior team
The Turkish Football Federation has appointed Sergen Yalçın as coach of Turkey’s senior national team. The federation board announced the decision on 20 October. The appointment gives the national side a new head coach after Vincenzo Montella’s departure.[1], [2]
Yalçın’s four-year term runs to 2030. He replaces Montella, who was dismissed two weeks before the appointment. The federation’s own announcement confirms the coaching decision but does not disclose financial terms for Yalçın’s contract.[1], [2]
Four Nations League defeats precede the change
Turkey lost its first four matches in the Nations League, the international competition for national teams. The results were 0-1 against France, 3-0 against Belgium, and 1-4 and 3-1 against Italy. Two of the four defeats therefore came against the same opponent. Yalçın takes charge after that opening sequence of results.[2]
Yalçın brings experience across Turkish club football
The 53-year-old has coached a number of Turkish clubs. He worked at Gaziantepspor twice and also held posts at Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor and Konyaspor. His coaching career includes Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor and Antalyaspor, as well as Beşiktaş. The new appointment takes him from that club-coaching background to responsibility for the senior national side.[2]
