Brewers survive ninth-inning review to win World Series opener

Milwaukee beat Tampa Bay 3-2 in the World Series opener after a ninth-inning review briefly interrupted its celebrations. A supposed game-ending double play was overturned, leaving the Rays a run behind with two runners in scoring position. Trevor Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca to secure the Brewers’ first home World Series game since 1982.

Milwaukee takes the opening game

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in the opening game of the World Series. Milwaukee took the first lead in the series with a home victory at American Family Field.[1], [2]

The final inning briefly left the outcome uncertain. With the bases loaded, a Hicks ground ball was initially ruled a game-ending double play. Review showed that Cooper Pratt’s foot had left second base. One out was overturned, a Tampa Bay run counted and the Rays remained alive at 3-2.[1]

Megill gets the final out

Tampa Bay still had two runners in scoring position after the decision changed. Trevor Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca to finish the game. The Brewers had turned to Megill for the ninth after relief work from Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby. Milwaukee’s first home World Series game since 1982 ended with a win.[1]

Early runs and a seventh-inning cushion

Jackson Chourio reached base in the first inning and Christian Yelich’s triple brought him home. William Contreras then drove in Yelich for a 2-0 advantage. Tampa Bay scored in the fourth, while Chourio’s seventh-inning single brought Cooper Pratt home to make it 3-1. Starter Jacob Misiorowski allowed one earned run over five innings.[1]
