Mostert secures his passage to Sandown
Chaz Mostert won the rain-soaked opening Supercars race on the Gold Coast, securing a place in the Sandown semi-finals.[1], [2]
He became the first driver to advance. It was his third victory of the season and his third consecutive success at this venue, moving him from eighth to fourth in the championship.[1]
An early pass opens a commanding lead
The field initially followed the safety car for three laps. Mostert passed polesitter Broc Feeney on the first green-flag lap. His opening stint brought an advantage of almost 20 seconds over Anton De Pasquale. By the time of his final pit stop on lap 67, he was around half a minute ahead of Matt Payne.[1]
Mostert negotiated a late incident involving James Golding and Murray and finished approximately 23 seconds clear. Golding had also crashed at the Beach Chicane earlier, without bringing out another safety car.[1]
Payne’s penalty promotes Reynolds to second
A five-second track-limits penalty pushed Payne to third. David Reynolds, who crossed the line 4.1 seconds behind him, inherited second after starting 14th and making an early stop on lap nine. Payne’s podium still extended his championship lead. De Pasquale placed fourth, Andre Heimgartner fifth and Will Brown sixth. Feeney finished ninth.[1]
