Smith claims his first victory at Talladega
Sammy Smith won a NASCAR Truck Series race for the first time at Talladega.[1], [2]
The race was settled in overtime at Talladega Superspeedway. The 22-year-old Spire Motorsports driver won on his eleventh series start. He led 21 of 86 laps in the No. 7 Chevrolet and held on through the overtime finish.[1]
Tyler Ankrum finished narrowly behind the winner after emerging from a four-wide fight for second with Austin Green. Green took third, ahead of Ty Majeski and championship leader Kaden Honeycutt. Post-race technical inspection confirmed Smith’s win.[1]
Crashes and mechanical trouble interrupt the race
Five caution periods interrupted the race, which included two major multi-truck crashes. Contact between Stewart Friesen and Andrés Pérez preceded an eight-truck accident on lap 17. Tony Stewart, Cleetus McFarland and title contender Daniel Hemric were among those involved. Stage-one winner Gio Ruggiero then had his truck stuck in reverse on pit road, while Grant Enfinger suffered an early tyre problem and later crashed.[1]
Honeycutt keeps the lead with two rounds left
Honeycutt left with a 43-point advantage over Layne Riggs, who finished eighth. Majeski moved into third in the championship, 141 points behind the leader. Christian Eckes slipped from third to fifth, 144 points back. Ruggiero, Hemric, Ben Rhodes, Ankrum and Enfinger dropped out of title contention. Martinsville and Homestead remain. Smith had announced hours before this race that he would contest the Truck Series full-time next season.[1]
