Şengün drives Houston’s closing attack
Alperen Şengün scored 29 points as Houston Rockets beat San Antonio Spurs away from home.[1], [2]
The game took place at Moody Center in Austin. Houston won 114-110, taking their record to two victories from two games; San Antonio lost for the second time. Şengün supplied 14 points in the fourth quarter, making four of six shots and adding two assists during that period.[1]
Thompson denies Wembanyama a tying basket
Houston had to withstand another late challenge after Victor Wembanyama finished an alley-oop to reduce the margin to one. Kevin Durant answered with a three-pointer, restoring a four-point advantage. Amen Thompson subsequently blocked Wembanyama’s potential game-tying layup. Durant finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists.[1]
The contest featured 14 lead changes and 11 ties. Houston’s biggest advantage was 11 early in the second quarter, while the Spurs never held a lead of more than one point.[1]
VanVleet describes the space for single coverage
Fred VanVleet said San Antonio’s attention to Durant, together with their reluctance to leave him open, allowed Şengün and Thompson to attack single coverage. Houston repeatedly returned the ball to Şengün late on. VanVleet, back from the right knee ligament injury that had cost him the previous season, had 16 assists without a turnover across the first two games.[1]
