Fenerbahçe turn derby around
Fenerbahçe Medicana recovered from losing the opening set to beat Eczacıbaşı Peron 3-1 in the fifth round of Turkey’s women’s Sultanlar League. DHA’s match report and volleyball publication Voleybolun Sesi both record the derby result and Fenerbahçe’s fourth win in its fourth league match. The encounter was played at TVF Burhan Felek Vestel Voleybol Salonu in Istanbul. Eczacıbaşı took the opener 27-25, but the home team won the following sets 27-25, 25-21 and 25-22. The equal score in the first two sets makes the turnaround more specific than a routine straight-sets result. Eczacıbaşı left with its second defeat, while Fenerbahçe continued an unbeaten league start.[1], [2]
The middle sets shift the match
Eczacıbaşı began the first set more strongly and led 15-11. Fenerbahçe caught up at 23-23, but Ekaterina Antropova supplied the last point for the visitors. The second set began with a Fenerbahçe lead of 7-4 and an Eczacıbaşı timeout. The visitors fought back to edge ahead 20-19, showing that the home side had not yet taken control. Fenerbahçe answered late and took that set by the same 27-25 margin that it had just conceded, levelling the match at one set each. The pair of extended sets established a tight contest before the home team created more separation. The close second-set finish restored parity after two sets in which both teams held the lead.[1]
A fourth win from four league games
The third set was level at 10-10 and again at 15-15 before Fenerbahçe put together three points, with Arina Fedorovtseva scoring to make it 18-15. Yaprak Erkek helped Eczacıbaşı draw level at 20-20, but Fenerbahçe responded with another three-point run and Melissa Vargas put Fenerbahçe ahead 23-20. The home team closed it 25-21. Eczacıbaşı opened the fourth set 4-1, yet Fenerbahçe immediately drew level. Ana Cristina put the home side ahead 10-8; after another 15-15 tie, Sinead Jack Kısal helped create a three-point gap. Fenerbahçe finished 25-22. The repeated recoveries came before Fenerbahçe completed its third consecutive set win; Eczacıbaşı had kept the scores close.[1]
