Anthony Edwards faces weeks out for right-knee procedure

Anthony Edwards is expected to miss several weeks for a right-knee procedure after Minnesota’s strong start to the season. An informed person told The Associated Press that a more precise return timetable would follow surgery. FOX 9 separately confirmed the planned procedure with a team source and reported an absence of up to two months.

A knee procedure interrupts Edwards’s start

Anthony Edwards, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard in the NBA, is expected to miss several weeks for a right-knee procedure. A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that the plan had not yet been announced publicly by the team and requested anonymity. FOX 9 separately confirmed the procedure with a Timberwolves source, putting the possible absence at up to two months. A more precise return timetable will follow surgery, according to the person who spoke to AP.[1], [2]

Edwards had appeared on recent injury reports with a right-knee problem. Periodic pain had affected him for some time, while the specifics of the current problem were unclear. Before the decision to proceed, Minnesota had listed his availability for Wednesday’s Golden State game as questionable.[1]

Minnesota lose a record-setting scorer

Minnesota won three of its first four games as Edwards averaged 33.3 points. He scored 45 in the opening win at Miami and 47 in Monday’s defeat by Cleveland. His 133 points across the first four games set a Timberwolves record, overtaking the mark of 120 that he had set two seasons earlier. During Sunday’s win over Toronto, he appeared uncomfortable after a transition dunk, then stood in the corner squeezing his knee on the next Minnesota possession.[1]

A longer absence would affect award eligibility

A two-month absence would cost Edwards around 25 games and leave him below the NBA’s 65-game threshold for major end-of-season awards. That remains conditional on the eventual length of his recovery. He played 61 games last season, largely with knee-related problems. Earlier in his career he had been much more consistently available, missing only 19 of a possible 400 games across his first five NBA seasons.[1]

Edwards is a four-time All-Star and has twice been selected to the All-NBA teams. He also won Olympic gold with the United States in Paris in 2024. His NBA career scoring average is 24.6 points per game.[1]
